SPONSORSHIP REQUEST FROM FIONA MURRAY
World Horse Welfare Coast to Cost Challenge 2010
I have been lucky enough to be accepted on the Coast to Coast Challenge which means riding east to west in the far north of Scotland, 4th to 11th Sept. I will be riding many miles each day and "horror of horrors" for me camping each night. Not to mention the midges, lack of showers and the open air loo! Whilst the trip itself will be difficult, the biggest challenge is raising the £1500 I have pledged to World Horse Welfare in order to take part in this trip. The cost of the trip is £620 and I have paid this myself as I would have been unhappy to ask anyone else to cover this.
I am passionate about helping in any way I can to ease the suffering of horses, ponies and donkeys both in this country and abroad. My particular interest is to stop the appalling live and inhumane transport of horses for slaughter. I can barely even look at photos and cannot even imagine the reality of these long journeys to hell! Sadly, there is also incredible neglect and abuse in this country ! Please see my photos and visit the World Horse Welfare Web link to see the vital work they are doing as a voice for the silent suffering. They are "Working for a world where the horse is used but never abused"
So please dig deep and donate now. I appreciate your support so much. Thanks a million xx

SPONSORSHIP REQUEST
I would be very grateful if Strathendrick RC could sponsor me to complete a charity horse trek through the Andes on behalf of the Blue Cross Pet welfare charity?
This September I am completing the challenge of a lifetime on horseback, riding along the ancient Inca trails at very high altitude (4000m, 12,000ft) in the Andes, Peru. We will be riding for 5 days solid around 20 miles per day, camping out in the middle of nowhere - so hoping that my bum and I will survive it!
I would be very grateful for your support in doing this in sponsoring me. Its easy to donate with a debit or credit card at my online page: http://www.justgiving.com/Gillian-Fleming1
The money raised will go to the Blue Cross pet welfare charity which saves and re-homes abandoned pets who would otherwise be put down .
I am paying my own costs and sponsoring myself but have to raise £1500 to be able to go and although I don't go till September, the charity money has to be raised by mid July so would appreciate if you could help me meet my target.
Thanks very much
Gillian

| Strangles - for useful information go to - http://www.aht.org.uk/pdf/steps.pdf |
Strangles
The following is a simplified version of a more complex subject. The views are my opinion and if in doubt you should consult your own vet.
Strangles is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi. Signs can occur 3 to 14 days after contact.
Symptoms include depression, dullness, loss of appetite, thick nasal discharge, cough and elevated temperature.
It is 100% treatable and many vets now advocate EARLY INTENSIVE antibiotics ( penicillin) during the initial fever stage . If it is treated early enough many horses make a full recovery within four days. Only if it is left untreated and abscess develop do you have to lance and drain and then use antibiotics
Prevention
It is advisable to isolate any new entry on to a yard for two weeks. If an out break occurs on a yard, the yard should quarantine itself until three weeks after the last outbreak and institute strict hygiene measures to limit cross contamination. Strangles is primarily spread from one coughing horse to another. There are other theoretical routes but many vets consider contact to be the main one. It is highly unlikely you will get strangles riding through a field where an infected horse has been. So at shows keep your horses away from other horses where ever possible and as an extra precaution you can stop your horse grazing where other horses have grazed (although this appears to be a theoretical risk )
Diagnosis
Blood tests show immunity. So your horse may have an active infection or it may have met the disease in the past and developed an immunity then. If it is negative it is not strangles. If it is positive and has clinical signs this is strangles.
Nasal swabs can be used. Three negative swabs and you are clear. However some vets now feel that this is an insensitive test and can be misleading. There is then scoping but that is expensive .
Conclusion - Keep your horses out of coughing distance from other horses. If you suspect strangles call the vet and treat early. If there have been no outbreaks at your yard for three weeks welcome back !

SHARER REQUIRED
I am looking for an adult rider to share Brewster, a 16.3 Clydesdale x Thoroughbred. He is well schooled (though not push-button) and has successfully competed working hunter, x-country and dressage. He does have his moments so a confident, experienced rider is required. An outdoor school with jumps is available for use so lessons etc can be arranged. I no longer have time to ensure he gets the exercise he needs (ridden at least 3 times a week) so would be looking for someone who could commit to this plus some yard duties for a small contribution to his upkeep.

Congratulations to Strathendrick RC member Rhoda McVey, British Level 2 Trec Champion!
British Trec Championships
The British Trec Championships took place at West Linton in the Scottish Borders on the 21st to 23rd August this year. With 115 competitors, this has been the biggest British Championships to date, the last two having been in Derbyshire and Staffordshire respectively. It was a wonderful occasion, and great to show off the best of the Scottish countryside and Scottish hospitality to the rest of the UK. Steak Pie and Haggis were on offer at the Saturday night ceilidh, and a great time was had by all - most people didn't sleep in for Day Two. Day One was the orienteering section, and it was interesting in the Map Room at 7.30am to realise we were going to be climbing a real hill during the course of the day. 1754ft up Mount Maw by 10.15am, the views were spectacular and the weather oddly kind. Day Two was wet, so much praise must go to the obstacle judges who were out from 9am to 6pm. The course was 1800m, and required a good gallop to stay within the time - as well as logs, ditches, steps and hedges which might be familiar on a normal cross country course, we also had to tackle a water crossing, a bridge, low branches(8 inches above the horse is all you are allowed!) and even bending.
Three of the five Championship classes were won by Scots - Rhoda McVey riding Making Strides Fizzical Presence (Fizz to her friends!), at 14.2hh, proved small can be good, winning the Level 2 Individual Championship. 'Fizz' has done just four competitions but after leading overnight, managed to keep her lead at the end of day two by just two points, above some top combinations, including last year's Champion. 'Fizz' is by Shantamar, a lovely TB stallion who used to stand at the Rennie's Lomondside Stud, and is Rhoda's first horse, proving that you don't have to start young in order to succeed at Trec. Having an intrepid spirit counts for a lot, but any sort of horse can do it.
Full results are available on www.bhs.org.uk and details of local competitions can also be found on www.makingstrides.co.uk . The winter series competitions continue at Sandyflat on the 23rd of January and the14th of March.

There has been quite a bit of 'talk' about horse droppings over the past few months in BHS press. There was also an article in the Stirling Observer a month or so ago particulary about Strathblane where there have been complaints about horse droppings on the public footpaths. I feel that we need to keep the public happy or we may find that our new freedom of access may not be so free in the future. Happy New Year! Julia Cross (TRAG)
ODE TO A LOAD This is a poem about the fact that all our horses dung,
The joy of barrow loads every day, the perfume that fills your lung,
They do it all over the place we know, you can't stop them and that's a fact,
When hacking or stabled or out in the field, when they want to crap they crap.
As lovers of horses to us it's OK, to cyclists and walkers it's not.
When out in the country the last thing they want is a dropping attached to their boot,
So riders take note when out and about and your horse is needing the loo
Please move to the side and deposit your load in the hedge or the side of the road.
And if it's too late and you've dropped on the track if it's safe to get off then please do
Kick the dung to one side, carry on with your ride and keep our paths clear of horse poo.
Now we all know that horse dung is mainly just grass, a big hazard for health it is not,
But the public don't know, they think poo is just poo and unpleasant when stuck on a shoe.
Please think of these people when out and about enjoying your favourite hobby,
Try make it a more pleasant outing for them and keep our paths free of horse jobby!
